Battle Over History

The Armenians call it their holocaust - the 1915 forced deportation and massacre of more than a million Armenians by the Turks. But the Turks and our own government have refused to call it genocide.
Turkey And Armenia's Battle Over History
@@@@@
Today?s Zaman14 March 2010, Sunday Turkey blames everybody but itself
I don?t believe Obama can make the genocide issue disappear as Turkey requests. In fact, the genocide issue is not going to go away in the US or anywhere else, with the Swedish parliament narrowly approving a resolution last Thursday recognizing the 1915 mass killing of Armenians in Turkey as genocide and prompting the Turkish government to recall its ambassador there, too, in protest. While Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said he regretted the decision because it would serve as another blow to Turkey?s reconciliation with Armenia, the fact is that Turkey could have moved the process forward months ago but preferred not to. So now they blame the US, the Swedes and the Armenians. In fact, anybody but themselves. If Turkey believed reconciliation with Armenia would make the genocide issue go away, then they were and are fooling themselves. As long as there is an Armenian diaspora on this planet, they will continue to push everywhere they can for recognition of the genocide, no matter how many historic commissions or rapprochements there are. The genocide issue is their life?s cause.
In addition, the Jan. 12 ruling by the Armenian Constitutional Court resulted in Turkey questioning whether Armenia remains committed to their promise to ratify the two protocols for the normalization of relations with Turkey. Perhaps Ankara would do well to take a good look in the mirror. It is Turkey more than any other entity that is responsible for the difficulty in the current reconciliation. Turkey has crippled the process by insisting on a parallel process on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which is clearly not going to happen any time soon. And here again Turkey blames Armenia for the lack of progress when in fact Armenia is no more to blame than Azerbaijan. And of course the blame game is not simply limited to this issue; it is alive and kicking on many others, too. On Cyprus Turkey always claims to be driving forward a solution and continues to deny any wrongdoing in the past rather continuing to state that its role in the Cyprus conflict was to bring peace to the island and placing the blame elsewhere for the continued division. It is the same when it comes to the membership negotiations with the EU. Blame for the stagnation of the talks always lies at the feet of the EU. But this approach should come as no big surprise given the fact that many Turks are simply unable to accept or acknowledged that their country, and the Ottoman Empire before it, has ever behaved in a way that was less than perfect. They are unable to deal with the past and have trouble acknowledging that sometimes Turkey does make mistakes. Rather they prefer to point the finger at others.
Was there any reason that you did not view the other side of this issue? Respectfully is the "job" of a reporter not to get both sides of a story? I imagine that pushing for something one sided is not in the best interest of all parties and only makes one group stand out as correct. It has been requested by the Turkish government to open all books to historians without prejudice to review and decide on the ultimate wording of issue. To date the only side not to open their book to this has been the Armenian side. Why? Is there something to hide. Also more money ha been spent on this issue rather than helping the people of Armenia. Are the American Armenians not more interested in the well being of Armenians in Armenia? Would they rather chase after a 100 year old issue that again can be decided by historians, rather than propaganda dollars. Sorry, but Bob you missed out on this one an cleary have shown all Turks that you do not care about them in anyway. I'll be turning the channel next time your on.
Genocide that was committed by turks Ottoman turks ##
Armenian population of below 3 million in the new republic faces a Turkey of 70 million with tremendous economic resources built on the plunder of Armenian wealth and land?through genocide and the century of oppression and massacre that preceded it?and tremendous military power awarded it through aid from the United States in recognition of its regional power?also gained through genocide. The Armenian Diaspora of perhaps five million is dispersed across the globe and slowly losing cohesion and relevance as powerful forces of assimilation and fragmentation take their toll. Reparations in the form of compensation for the wealth taken, which in many cases can be traced to Turkish families and business today, and lands depopulated of Armenians and thus ?Turkified? through genocide, are crucial to the viability of Armenian society and culture in the future. Without the kind of secure cradle the Treaty of Sevres was supposed to give Armenians, true regeneration is impossible: Turkish power, still violently hostile to Armenians, grows each day, as the post-genocide residual Armenia degenerates.

>>This was an absolutely disasterous piece of reporting totally biased towards the Armenian position. The reporter "lead" the Armenian commentator (Armenians were resented) and didn't once challenge his version of events while the Turkish ambassador is asked to prove a negative. Please also note the ambassador did not deny that anyone died. Much was also made of the recent killing of an Armenian journalist. What escaped discussion was the Armenian killings of Turkish diplomats in the early to mid 20th century.

Turkish Intellectuals, Writers, Reporters, Human rights activists hold pictures of Armenian victims in front of the historical Haydarpasa station in Istanbul April 24, 2010, during a demonstration to commemorate the 1915 mass killing of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. Banner reads ''Never again''. I never cared for the person that invented 301 penal-code Basically, a sleazer is a sleaze who refuses to accept they're a sleaze, when everyone knows for a fact, how damn sleazy they really are. The Ottomans did not view Armenians as "infidels" but as treasonous. Armenians were actively colluding with the Russians, enemies of the Ottoman empire during a time of war. The same empire that provided for them to live in prosperity and in the highest ranks of government for centuries.
Yes, it is expected that about 1 million Armenians lost their lives. What continues to allude discussion is the reality that muslim turks in the hundreds of thousands (many at the hand of Armenians) also lost their lives and were driven out of what was traditionally their homeland. About 2 million deaths in total during the periods from 1914 to 1922 for muslim turks.
The dying days of the Ottoman empire is messy bloody and finding innocents is next to impossible. Handing out white hats and black hats to two groups is breathtakingly simplistic and exactly what CBS has done. How embarrassing for what was once known as the standard bearer of American journalism.

British Prime Minister Gladstone's histrionic figure of 60,000 Bulgarian Christians slaughtered in 1876 captured the imagination of the west. The true figure later provided by a British Ambassador was 3,500--including Turks who were first slain by the Christians.
From 280,000-750,000, Armenians initially raised their death count to 800,000 to test the credibility waters. It passed muster with uninformed politicians easily influenced by campaign contributions and voting clout. Armenians then jumped the number to 1.5 million, and then 1.8 million by Armenian historian Kevork Aslan. For the last decades, an Armenian majority seems to have settled on the 1.5 million death plateau--which still exceeds their contemporary estimates by 200 to 500 percent. They are now testing the waters at 2.5-3 million killed as their chances for a congressional genocide resolution recede. It speaks volumes that champions of the inflated death figures have no explanation for why Armenians on the scene would have erred. Think of the absurdity of discarding the current death count of Afghan civilians in the United States-Afghan war in favor of a number deduced in the year 2109!
Armenians have a genuine tale of woe. It largely overlaps with the tale of tragedy and suffering that can be told by Ottoman Muslims during the war years: 2.4 million deaths in Anatolia, ethnic cleansing, starvation, malnutrition, untreated epidemics, and traumatic privations of war under a decrepit and collapsing Empire.
Unskewed historical truth is the antechamber of Turkish-Armenian reconciliation. That is why the Government of Turkey has proposed an international commission of impartial and independent experts with access to all relevant archives to determine the number and characterization of World War I deaths. Armenians are balking because they are skeptical of their own figures and accusations.
To paraphrase Mark Twain, there are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and the number of Armenians who are claimed by Armenians and their echo chambers to have died in an alleged World War I genocide. Almost a century later, the number of deaths they assert oscillates between 1.5-2 million. But the best contemporary estimates by Armenians or their sympathizers were 300,000-750,000 (compared with 2.4 million Ottoman Muslim deaths in Anatolia). Further, not a single one of those deaths necessarily falls within the definition of genocide in the authoritative Genocide Convention of 1948. It requires proof that the accused was responsible for the physical destruction of a group in whole or in substantial part specifically because of their race, nationality, religion, or ethnicity. A political or military motivation for a death falls outside the definition.
Immediately after the war, when events and memories were fresh, Armenians had no incentive to concoct high casualty figures or genocidal motivations for their deaths. Their objective was statehood. Armenians were encouraged by the self-determination concept in President Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points, (while conveniently forgetting that they were a minority in Eastern Anatolia where they hoped to found a new nation). Armenian leaders pointed to their military contribution to defeating the Ottomans and population figures that would sustain an Armenian nation.
Boghus Nubar, then Head of the Armenian Delegation to the Paris Peace Conference (1919), wrote to the French Foreign Minister Stephen Pichon: "The Armenians have been, since the beginning of the war, de facto belligerents, as you yourself have acknowledged, since they have fought alongside the Allies on all fronts, enduring heavy sacrifices and great suffering for the sake of their unshakable attachment to the cause of the Entente...." Nubar had earlier written to the Foreign Minister on October 29, 1918, that Armenians had earned their independence: "We have fought for it. We have poured out our blood for it without stint. Our people played a gallant part in the armies that won the victory."
When their quest for statehood shipwrecked on the Treaty of Lausanne and annexation by the Soviet Union in 1921, Armenians revised their soundtrack to endorse a contrived genocide thesis. It seeks a "pound of flesh" from the Republic of Turkey in the form of recognition, reparations, and boundary changes. To make their case more convincing, Armenians hiked the number of deaths. They also altered their story line from having died as belligerents against the Turks to having perished like unarmed helpless lambs.
Vahan Vardapet, an Armenian cleric, estimated a prewar Ottoman Armenian population of 1.26 million. At the Peace Conference, Armenian leader Nubar stated that 280,000 remained in the Empire and 700,000 had emigrated elsewhere. Accepting those Armenian figures, the number of dead would be 280,000. George Montgomery of the Armenia-American Society estimated a prewar Armenian population of 1.4-1.6 million, and a casualty figure of 500,000 or less. Armenian Van Cardashian, in testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 1919, placed the number of Armenian dead at 750,000, i.e., a prewar population of 1.5 million and a post-war figure of 750,000.
After statehood was lost, Armenians turned to their genocide playbook which exploited Christian bigotries and contempt for Ottoman Muslims. They remembered earlier successful anti-Ottoman propaganda. United States Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire during the war, Henry Morganthau, was openly racist and devoted to propaganda. On November 26, 1917, Morgenthau confessed in a letter to President Wilson that he intended to write a book vilifying Turks and Germans to, "win a victory for the war policy of the government." In his biography, "Ambassador Morgenthau's Story," Morgenthau betrays his racist hatred toward Turks ("humanity and civilization never for a moment enters their mind") and unconditional admiration for Armenians ("They are so superior to the Turks intellectually and morally.").
